Horonobe Underground Research Center of Japan Atomic Energy Agency has carried out investigated surface hydrogeological investigation in and around the Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory (URL) area as a part of Horonobe URL project. We continue meteorological observation, observation of river flux and water quality, soil moisture observation and groundwater level observation in order to understand recharge rate and groundwater flow in the shallow part, which are required for the setting of boundary and initial condition of the groundwater flow analysis. This report show current status and results of surface hydrogeological investigation in the Horonobe URL project.

To examine a period to need it in recovery after the earthquake of discharged groundwater by earthquake, in the northern part of Awaji Island that passed from Hyogo-ken Nanbu Earthquake in about 13 years, I analyzed chemical composition of discharged water, oxygen and hydrogen isotopic ratios of discharged water and measured quantity of discharged water.

In this study, the ground water analysis that assumes presence of salt water and/or high conductivity fault zone has been taken place in northern Awaji Island using numerical simulation. The author has accumulated data from the case with boundary condition and without it. The result shows that in the case of considering presence of salt water, both hydraulic total head and flux of surface flow has increased. A part of the point where large amount of discharge is shown by the analysis is corresponding to the point where spring water is confirmed by the field investigation. A part of the analytical result with continuous high conductivity zone is assumed discord with the result of the field investigation.

In Japan Atomic Energy Agency, surveillance studies are currently underway with the aims of establishing the evaluation system of a groundwater flow for a regional scale over long periods and verifying a hydrologic groundwater flow model with survey data etc. As part of these studies, the lineament extraction and natural -ray detection were conducted in two granite distribution regions in order to estimate the distribution of fractures and the hydrogeological structure at the crystalline terrain in a mountain area deficient in the existing information such as a drilling investigation. This report describes the result of combinatorial utilization of lineament extraction and natural -ray detection.
